Liu Xiaoyu: Dunk Contest Winner
Top 5 Prospects
59 Liu Xiaoyu PG 190 1989.3 Guangdong
A quick, springy guard who has a great smile and an easy-going personality. Ended up winning the dunk contest with several crowd pleasing dunks. But he is not all flash, he does all the things a coach could ask of a point guard. Worked hard in the PG station with Gordon Chiesa (New Jersey Nets) everyday. The biggest knock is that he must gain wieght. Unlike many Chinese players, Liu's age is thought to be correct. Recently signed to play for GuangDong, the top team in China at developing young talent, so that should really help him.
33 Han Shuo PG 195 1989.2 Jiangsu
Probably the best player here this week. Spent the first two days primarily as a shooting guard, as he was on the Chinese team in San Diego. The problem is that he then shoots too much. Focused on playing the point the final
two days, and that is when he is at his best. Passes the ball very well, and one of the few players here who really tries to pass the ball to the center at the low post. Always a threat to score with the ball in his hands. I saw him
talk to his teammates more, and always acknowledged good plays they made. Led his team to the championship at the camp.
68 Kim Jin Soo G/F 205 1989.5.11 Korea
Listed here as a PF, but one look at the skinny frame and you know there's no power. There is a lot of talent and understanding of the game. Lots of potential. Spent most of the time at the camp around the three point line. Shot too much, but understands the angles to get open. Is a pretty good passer, and can score in a variety of ways around the basket. Needs to do more of both. Must get much stronger and show the will to defend people. Going to high school in the US. Can certainly be an NCAA Div. I player. Question is will he work hard enough to take his game even higher?
94 Zhang Zhaoxu C 213 1987.11.18 Shandong
Tall and thin. Blocked about 4-5 shots in almost every game. Working in the big man station everyday really helped him. Saw him gain confidence as the camp went on. Turning point was a play Sunday morning when he dunked the ball in traffic, drawing a foul, and then pumped his fist in the air. Has to get the ball near the basket to be effective. In the championship game he made the final three points when he caught Han Shuo's drop back pass and scored and added the free throw.
88 Wu Dai-hao C 204 1985.2.7 Taiwan
Oldest player here at age 20. Has been a member of the Taiwan National Team for at least the last three years. Stronger than other players here, but also a bit out of shape. After the first day really struggled with the heat
and his conditioning. Wore a dreadlocks wig in the dunk contest and put on a good performance for the crowd. Scored 8 points in the All-Star Game, 2 of which came on a monster dunk to finish a break.
The Rest
98 Xu Lei C 205 1998.1.3 Tianjin
Was consistent all week in shooting the mid-range jumper. An All Star here (and in Shanghai).
97 Liu Yahui PF 204 1990.1.9 Jiangsu
One of the big kids who spent most of his time sitting with the injured players.
96 Zhang Dayu C 207 1991 Zhejiang
Big kid who really does try, but is slow in his movements and reactions. But he doesn't mind banging inside with the other centers. Good match up with Xu Lei in Friday's 3x3 games.
95 De Lehei F 204 1990.6 Bayi
A good spot up shooter who started the camp off very well. An All Star in Shanghai who also played on the Chinese team in the tournament in San Diego. Saw a nice jump hook on Friday. But took himself out of the morning game Friday after turning an ankle, and then sat out the rest of the camp.
93 Kang Chao-hsiang C 208 1987.4.19 Taiwan
A wide body who is limited in his low post play.
92 Ju Peng F 205 1990.1 Zhejiang
A player who was constantly in motion in Shanghai, always trying to get to the basket. But looked like he was sleep walking here. An All Star in Shanghai who also played on the Chinese team in the tournament in San
Diego.
91 Cun Shouwei C 205 1990 Yunnan
Another big kid who spent more time sitting and watching. An All Star in Shanghai who also played on the Chinese team in the tournament in San Diego.
90 Zheng Zhun C 213 1992 Shanxi
The big question: Is he really 13? Some feel he's closer to 16. Very skinny and seems to be still growing, how much will he fill out? A good 3 point shooter as seen in the drills. Made it to Saturday before I saw him limping..and then out for the reminder of the camp.
89 Zhang Chuyang SF 200 1990.1.12 Jiangsu
A slasher and driver. Plays with some energy. Always uses his right hand. Participated in the dunk contest.
87 Wu Qiang C 207 1986.10.24 Xinjiang
Very limited skills around the basket.
86 Zhou Peng F 207 1989.10.11 Guangdong
Captain of the sit and watch team. Disappointing because he is athletic and long. An All Star in Shanghai who also played on the Chinese team in the tournament in San Diego.
85 Marco Deric F 203 1987.9.18 Australia
Plays hard and is physical. Needs to be set to shoot from outside.
83 Kai-Sai-Er-Jiang F 201 1988.3.6 Bayi
Sat out the Shanghai camp with ice on his knee every day. Played in San Diego. Played here the first day but hard to get a read on what type of player he is. Made harder by the fact that he sat out the rest of the camp.
82 Chen Fei SF 195 1988.1.4 Jiangsu
A forward who feels he can drive by you or pull up and shoot over you. An All Star in Shanghai who also played on the Chinese team in the tournament in San Diego. Was playing fairly well in camp until Lee McGaffin caught him
with an elbow on the last day in the 3x3 games. Chen Fei threw some punches, and the result was he missed the All-Star Game.
80 Chang Lin G/F 202 1989.3.30 Beijing
A very raw player who nonetheless has lots of potential. Sees himself as a shooting guard. His shot right now is not very consistent. Threw down one of the best dunks in the camp on Saturday. Needs the kind of weight training
and individual coaching that's just not available in China right now.
77 Xu Jialiang F 202 1989.2.3 Shandong
Was shooting the ball deep from the first day on. Won the camp 3 point contest with a score of 19. But that was the extent of his game. Only scored 2 points in the All-Star Game.
72 Zhang Chaolong G 190 1989.3 Bayi
Skinny left handed guard who is listed as a PG, but all he did was shoot.
63 Chou Tzu-hua G 183 1987.1 Taiwan
A combination guard who could play the point or be the shooting guard.
60 Yoo Sung Ho F 201 1988.4.17 Korea
Was listed as a center, but mostly shoots 3's. Good shooter in drills, but in 3x3 and games takes crazy off balance shots that have no chance to go in.
57 Chris Molitor SG 199 1988.8 Australia
His shot doesn't look bad, but he wasn't very consistent this week. Should continue to improve, and not hard to see as an NCAA Div II or NAIA player.
55 Zhang Zhenhu PG 193 1988.1 Hebei
Played very well at this camp and was an All Star. I thought he should have been one in Shanghai as well. Plays the point, but tends to look for his shot first. Has 3 point range, and is quick off the dribble, so is very hard to guard. He needs to find out how to make his teammates better.
52 Xu Xu G 193 1989.1 Bayi
Was an All Star at the camp in Shanghai. I couldn't figure out why. After watching him here, I still have no idea.
51 Ji Zhe PF 202 1989.10.14 Liaoning
A banger and a bruiser. His shot at the free throw line looks good. With his style it better be, because he's not going to score many field goals without receiving lots of contact.
37 Hsu Yi-chieh PG 181 1987.1 Taiwan
A classic point guard who does most things very well. He pushes the ball up the floor, passes when he should, and shoots when he should. Makes good decisions and sets people up in the right spot. Biggest drawback is size at
181. Sometimes would get into the lane for what looked like an open layup only to have it blocked by the long arms of the help defense.
27 Duan Chenglong PG 186 1988.5 Shandong
An All Star in Shanghai who also played on the Chinese team in the tournament in San Diego. But on cruise control here.
21 Lee McGaffin SG 186 1987.12 Australia
The Australian kids brought a toughness not usually seen here, and none more so than this streaky shooting guard. Was still banging guys and throwing elbows in Sunday's 3x3 games when everyone else was walking around taking it easy. Of course that led to a fight when Chen Fei got caught with one after subbing into the game.
19 Kerry Williams PG 183 1987.7 Australia
Likes to take the long 3 when the defense sags off. But limited when the defense stays up on him. Good passer in the open court.
16 Patrick Mills PG 180 1988.8 Australia
Quick guard who loves to drive. Surprisingly got a hand on several offense rebounds to tip the ball and keep it alive until a teammate could grab it.
