한민족의 민속 놀이, 

두개의 팀으로 나누어서 서로 돌멩이를 던져 상대편 마을까지 밀어붙인 팀이 승리하는 행사

.

실제로는 전쟁을 방불케하는 놀이였으며, 

날붙이는 자제했지만 몽둥이와 짱돌로 싸우기 때문에 몇명 죽어나가는 것은 예삿일 이었던 놀이.

기원에 대해서는 명확하지 않다. 

별다른 이유를 찾을 수 없어 아마 이러한 석전의 경험의 군사력에 도움이 될 수 있었다거나, 

혹은 고위층이 유흥거리로 보기 위해 장려했다, 

혹은 평소 억눌린 민중의 폭력성을 방출하여 범죄율을 낮추는 역할을 했다는 등의 가설만 무성하다.

이를 그냥 조금 과격한 스포츠 인줄 알았던 서양인들이 말려들었다가 혼미백산한 일화가 전해진다.

Lillias Horton Underwood의 기록을 보자.

이 여성은 남편 호러스 그랜트 언더우드와 조선에 방문하였다. 

의사이자 장로교 선교사이다.

명성황후의 주치의 이기도 했다.

During my first year I had the exciting and doubtful privilege of being present at a native sectional or stone fight, an experience which few covet even once—and which the wise and informed, at least of womankind, invariably forego. Once a year at a certain season, where two neighborhoods or sections have grievances against each other, they settle them by one of these fights. They choose captains, arrange the opposing parties, and begin firing stones and tiles at each other. As one crowd or the other is by turns victorious, and the pursued flee before their enemies, and as those who are at one moment triumphant are often the very next the vanquished, hotly chased, it is almost impossible to find any safe point of vantage from which to view the conflict. At any instant the place one has chosen, as well removed and safe, may become the ground of the hottest battle. Very large stones are often thrown, and people are fatally injured, though not as frequently as one would think. It is a wonder that hundreds are not killed or wounded. In going from my home to visit a friend one day, a few weeks after my arrival, I was obliged to pass a large crowd of men, who seemed divided into two parties, and were very noisy and vociferous. I remarked upon this to 29my friend, and sending to inquire, we found it was the preliminaries of a stone fight which I had witnessed. Her husband said it would not be safe for me to return alone, and therefore to my lasting gratitude offered to see me through it.

나는 첫해에 원주민의 돌싸움에 참여하는 의심스러운(적어도 현명하고 지식이 풍부한 사람은, 특히 여성이라면, 절대적으로 포기할만한) 특권을 누릴 수 있었다.

... 그들은 대장을 선택하고, 상대편을 배치하고, 서로에게 돌과 타일을 발사하기 시작하는데, . 

...매우 큰 돌이 던져지고 사람들이 치명적인 부상을 입는데, 수백 명의 사상자가 나오지 않는게 놀라운 일이었다.

...내가 도착한 지 몇 주가 지난 어느 날 친구를 만나러 집에서 길을 가던 중, 

나는 두 편으로 나뉘어 시끄럽고 떠들썩한 많은 남자들의 무리를 지나쳐야만 했다... 

We soon found that the stones and missiles were coming our way, and were forced to run for shelter to a Korean house. For a few moments the fight was hot around us, and then as it seemed to have passed on—quite far down the street—we ventured forth, only to find that the tide had again turned, and the whole mob were tearing in our direction. Mr. Bunker, for it was he, said there was nothing for it but to scale a half-broken wall into an adjacent compound, and run for it to the house of Mr. Gilmore, not far distant. So, reckless of my best gown, I scaled the wall with great alacrity, and we ran for it quite shamelessly. Missiles of considerable size were raining around us, and the possibility, or rather probability, that one would soon light on our heads, accelerated our speed to no small degree. These affairs are often funny in retrospect, but smack strongly of the tragic at the time, while the outcome is so decidedly uncertain. However, by much dodging and circling, frequently sheltering ourselves under the wall, we at length reached Mr. Gilmore’s house, when, in a somewhat ruffled and perturbed condition, I waited till the coast was quite clear and found my way home, a wiser and deeply thoughtful woman.

우리는 곧 돌과 미사일이 우리쪽으로 오고 있다는 것을 발견하고 한인 가옥으로 대피해야 했다.... 

우리는 길모어 씨의 집으로 위험을 무릅쓰고 나아갔지만, 분위기가 바뀌어 전체 폭도들이 우리 방향으로 몰려오고 있었다...

상당한 크기의 미사일이 우리 주변에 쏟아지고 있었다.. 

비처럼 쏟아는 돌들이 곧 우리의 머리를 칠것이라 우리의 속도를 적지 않게 가속시켰다.

많이 피하고 돌면서 벽 아래에 몸을 숨긴 채 마침내 우리는 길모어 씨의 집에 도착했다... 

혼란스럽고 동요된 상태에서 나는 해안이 꽤 맑아질 때까지 기다렸다가 집으로 가는 길을 찾았다... 

정리하자면 길을 걷던 이 여성은 석전이 벌어지는 현장에 지나가던 중 접근했다가 

별안간 자신들이 타겟이 되어 무수한 공격을 받은 경험을 했으나, 

다른 건물로 피신했다가 부서진 벽을 타고 길모어의 집으로 도망 칠 수 있었다고 한다.

하지만 얼마 후에는 조금더 심각한 사건이 일어난다.

On one occasion not long since an affair of this kind threatened very serious results for a hot-headed young compatriot of ours, who went to photograph one of these fights. A cool-headed American recently snapped his camera on a tiger here before shooting it, and it may have been in emulation of him, that our young friend made this attempt. He soon became convinced that he was the 30object at which all the missiles were sent, and that the bloodthirsty ruffians were all seeking his life. Being unfortunately as well as unlawfully armed with a six-shooter, over-excited and alarmed, he fired into the crowd and fled. His bullet entered the fleshy part of the leg of one of the natives, who fell, as most of them supposed, mortally wounded; and now indeed the wrath of the crowd on both sides was directed at its hottest against the thoroughly frightened young man. He ran for his life—the crowd pursuing with yells of fury. 

얼마 지나지 않아 이런 종류의 사건이 우리의 화끈한 젊은 동포에게 매우 심각한 위협으로 찾아왔는데, 

그는 이러한 싸움 중 하나를 사진으로 찍으러 나간 것입니다.

...그는 곧바로 자신이 모든 투사체의 표적이 되었다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 

주위의 피에 굶주린 악당들이 모두 그의 목숨을 노리고 있었습니다.

.. 불행하게도 리볼버로 무장한 그는 너무 흥분하고 놀라서 군중을 향해 총을 발사했습니다,

그의 총알은 원주민 중 한 사람의 다리 살 부분에 들어갔고, 치명상을 입었습니다. 

...이제 정말로 양쪽 군중의 분노는 완전히 겁에 질린 젊은이를 향하여 가장 뜨거워졌습니다. 

그는 목숨을 걸고 달려갔습니다. 군중은 분노에 찬 함성을 지르며 추격했습니다. 

이 청년의 이름은 Clare Hess.

호기심에 이끌려 사진을 찍으러 갔는데, 자신이 접근하자마자 편을 나누어 싸우던 사람들이 자신을 향해 일제히 공격을 시작했고,

겁에 질린 그는 총을 난사해 그중 한발이 한 조선인의 다리에 박혀버린 것.

네프의 기술

When the crowd surged, he became alarmed and "fired his revolver in the air to scare the people away. [This was a mistake as] these people on such an occasion are in no mood to be trifled with" and they rushed towards the American. 

군중이 덮쳐오자 놀란 그가 충을 쏴 겁을 주려고 했다 사람들이 미국인을 향해 돌진했다.

"In [these stone fights], rival villages assemble their best men in line and stone the opposing line of villagers. If damage is done by the stones the men rush at each other and fight with clubs. Severe injuries are always received on either side and there are usually several deaths each year. Thousands of spectators cover the adjoining hills and when a rush takes place the whole crowd surges back to avoid the flying stones. foreigners are usually careful to keep well out of reach of stones when visiting the scene of one of these fights."

외국인들은 이 돌싸움 현장에서 충분히 멀리 떨어져 구경해야 한다.

"I rebuked him for firing in such a crowd, thinking he had simply fired into the air. He said he had been attacked by the crowd. I took his revolver away though it was a very large one, I struck in into my pocket. The man objected strongly to my taking his revolver and I had to use a little force. He asked me to protect him and I told him I could do nothing there but that he should go on to the legation. He then fled toward the city and we followed deliberately. Quite a crowd of Koreans followed the flying man, some of whom told me that a Korean had been shot and killed."

..내가 그를 꾸짖었더니 그는 자신이 군중에게 공격당했다고 말했다.

나는 그의 리볼버를 빼았아 내 주머니에 쑤셔넣었다.

그는 나한테 자신을 보호해달라 했지만 공사관으로 가는 것 외에는 아무것도 할 수 없다고 말했다. 

다수의 한국인이 도망가는 그를 쫒았는데, 몇명이 나한테 말하길 총을 맞은 한국인이 죽었다고 말했다.

다시 릴리아스의 기록으로 돌아오면

he had nearly a mile to go to reach shelter in the American legation, which he at length managed to do, panting and almost exhausted. 

그는 사력을 다해 거의 1마일을 달려 미국 공사관에 도착할 수 있었습니다.

주미 공사관

결국 간신히 도망친 클레어 헤스는 살아남았으나 총상을 입은 조선인이 사경을 헤멜동안 공사관 감옥에서 떨어야 했다.

이에 대해서 호레이스와 릴리아스는 상반된 입장을 보이는데,

릴리아스는 클레어를 동정했지만 호레이스는 미국인의 수치라고 평했다.

결국 릴리아스가 클레어에게 200엔을 빌려주고,

다리를 맞은 조선인이 3월에 기운을 회복하면서,

클레어는  140엔을 배상하고 조선을 떠나는 조건으로 합의 할 수 있었다.
